About Necronomicon : -(text not !!! edited or checked for spelling/grammar yet)-

The book written by the so called “mad Arab” isn’t an invention by H.P.Lovecraft but refers to a real book. This kind of writing wasn’t meant for a general public, because also they wouldn’t know how to deal with it.

People throughout history used to have ways of writing down, or “receive” an inspiration/information of visions that were created in a trance-kind of mind and through certain methods and conditions. These methods were used to activate and stimulate certain areas in the brain that stood for certain principles and truths. The visions they saw there or heard through explanatory voices were very interesting and provided details how things hung together. It also gave for instance insights like on the evolution of mankind, on the evolution of the mind, on how creation was formed and how it is connected with each kind of creation, about the different levels of entities that hold together or inhabited a body, about the world and the rest of the universe hanging together, and how they are related to each other, with even information on physical aspects like on the solar system, atoms etc. and our connection in it, and about its durations of movements of life/death and reoccurrences, about information on the background of the first creation, and how and which rules are still followed because of the way the first creation was formed, with tendencies all things still follow, including the mind that comes to its own creations.

The first “creation” often is directly described with the positions of a whole hierarchy. Only a certain part of such visions about this were taken to a form of some recognized books like the Old Testament. Where this all came from, and the method how to check this out, and how to reflect it again into the evolutions in our reality, are deliberatly not mentioned, or forgotten. Some other parts were equally deliberately wrongly translated or forgotten as well. Certain exoteric sects like for instance Roman Catholisism, which became one of the “big” religions, used this 'filter' especially for its own benefit, leaving noone and no trace left to make anyone knew to be able to check it out again, if this information wasn't perhaps incomplete or even misinterpreted.

Salomon’s seals for instance, inhibited some of these methods to show many aspects possible within human psychology. With these seals of concentration and forming the right consitions he could go to the different parts of this psychology on different levels of existance and within its "creative" process at the same time. These aspects were described and presented as creatures, in an order from hell to heaven. One could ask through Solomon's and other methods, for instance, at the so called ententies that presented them being within that energy, how these principles "worked", and what was their signification in specific situations, and for creation and coming to creation in general. These seals were not just meant to “free these entities” in a general human psychology, as later groups like Satanists would prefer to believe.

Necronomicon is one of the strangest books of such kind of visions, because it describes the world, not as seen from a “human soul”. Christians for instance have their Apocalyptic vision. The final judgement is also the ultimate Christian and Jewish goal of the soul that at the same time wants to liberate itself from earthly boundaries. These Apocalyptic scriptures work like the wet dream of the human soul wanting to become a free mind again. This goal is seen as their ultimate spiritual goal, but perhaps is in fact mostly the desire of the spirit but also of the thinking process, not only to become a pure form on its own, but, which is also participating in the background, also not to have any responsibility any more with anything on and with this earth. It is like an adolescent/adult’s disciple’s dream to get rid of these earthly duties, and to go and live only in the mind, also because mind was created once with no bound to this earthly process before. Once it was created with a free feeling once it noticed its own consciousness, in an independent way from what the other creations had in its core.  The Apocalypse give a renewed desire for a completely freed-from-earth soul. It is this vision that some believers like I guess also the Orthodox Jews, the Rosecrucians, etc. have in mind and prefer to achieve. The apocalyptic story in this way will be interpreted as nothing more but the dream of making such vision come true, because at that point the mind would be the only ruler !

The Necronomicon however speaks from the other side of things, as seen from the “earthly” powers, which are called ‘draconic powers’. There’s also an opposite apocalypse written down here that speaks of that these powers will get back in balance with the earth, and will take over the earth again.

Before the big religions we know now, I believe people were bound to two spiritual principles with their impulses brought forth by motives coming forth from these principles. I also believe 'society' combined with 'humanity' or 'human condition' still has both principles in, as in combination they both fight very differently for their own rights for existance and evolution. The first principle I talk about is governed by the evolution which is in our genes, with the desires that comes forth from it. These are the draconic powers, which one can be noticed under varied forms in the “duende”, the “psychedelic”, Sufi, tantra, fung-shui, and in spontaneous and human 'true pleasure' conditions. The other evolution is the mind, the so called soul who felled down to earth and who now desires to find the stairway back to God with a purified mind, trying hard to find back a way to understand where the mind comes from as its pure spiritual essence...

The book explains that before creation, there was a struggle between two energies, the dragon-like spirits and the light spirits. It were the dragon-like spirits that created the physical world, while the light spirits, we often associate with God, angels and things like that, with the spirit, the growing soul etc.

Where in Christian religion, especially in the Apocalyptic story, the soul will try to overpower the dragon-like spirits, the soul/spirit itself feels itself betrayed and imprisoned in this world. Therefore it starts to define and treat this world as 'hell'. It's because he still finds himself dealing a hard time with it, and because he still desires to distance itself from the this earthly world.

In the apocalyptic vision of the Necronomicon the dragon-like entities, will not be thrown in hell, but they will take over the world again in spite of men’s desire to control them. The “opening of the gates” in that book and in this context also might signify a freedom to get every human aspect on the integrating roll, in spite of trying to conquer it in a-hell like condition up until eternity.

I’m sure the desire to become free, could only work in combination with the desire of nature, to cooperate within all struggles. The desire to become free has in its intellectual form its own egoistic nature, even when it says it will do this to reintegrate to the Godly territories. The desire of nature has also its own aspect of a terrible competitive desire for growth, but it still depends on a compromising cooperative competition for this struggle.

I don’t think the soul’s desires and human suffering soul wanting to become the only ruler are really that different in nature. Also the human nature’s wants to come to life. But it's only the nature itself which is contuing dependent on a competitive rule that says there must be some conditions fulfilled. One can only grow out of the forest with some comprimising respect to the whole of things. Only the combination of both desires will wins the game on the long run. A cooperative desire needs a human 'cultural' condition to make all conditions free in such a way that from both aspects its impulses can develop in a communicative way.

Just imagine some interpreters of some big religions especially prefer the idea of winning a battle against the dragons/devil, only because of some inner peoples desires in sake of a safety bed of the mind to control all the rest will start its "war"...

Crowley in his visions saw unusual things about this aspect. He said that those who persuade the big religions are not such people who automatically open op the heavens and goodness, but in the contrary, it are these that just open up the gates of hell. While in reality things work in a yin-yang principle, searching its opposite balance, the choice of 'only one ruler' makes in fact two entities, where the prosecuted shadow gets all attention, so that 'the one' never is left alone without 'the other'. Any of such conquest might be this way a lost game from the beginning. It could become an eternal struggle in desiring to become the only ruler (never mind it is the mind or the spontaneous draconic energy).

I repeat again that one could of course also understand from the beginning, that also the mind has this aspect of looking for its own egoistic goal to feel comfortable without much duties, while the earthly power also seeks for the best earthly cooperation of all energies with each other.

Crowley said specifically that followers of Christianity open up the gates of Satan, -something which we know through some historical facts-, Islam opens up the gates for Beelzebub, and Hinduism opens up the gates for Luciferian thinking, etc.

Both Christianity and Islam always had a wide variety of forms, but they also have their own tendencies for making the dangerous, in fact destructive choice, of trying deliberately a new goal to separation of its two energies, with a construction which will sound too extreme to all other more innocent versions. But in the end it is also this version of religion that will try its utmost best to influence, and even tyrannise all other versions.

I can see at least for Christianity which mistakes in interpretations might have caused this idea of "power over the bad" part :...

I said already that all heaven-and hell creatures are aspects within one person’s psychology.  If each of these aspects are spontaneously brought to appearance, they all still have this possible aspect of seeking balance with the rest of all processes that seek for growth, and they really could become, and better become communicative as soon as these ideas have taken at least some form....

Christ for instance never said in the bible, on the only spot where Satan is mentioned, the sentence “Satan go away”, but instead it was written down that he said “Satan, follow me”. The signification of this is that every action will have its shadowy effect, which better follows the core, instead of becoming to have a life on its own. If Christian Church would have adapted this correctly they would never have abused this under forms of inquisition and such. When fighting against the shadow of things (everything has its bad-for-something nature) this fighting against it, creates hell instead of creating chances to participate in the growing process.

In daily life I guess both processes of growth work well together, within a society governed by a need for inner freedom, mixed with an inner expression, under the form of a well developed communicative Culture. Life is in fact a mixture of both processes I just described. A world where the dragon rules could also mean a world where even all “dragons” are no longer always negative, but again useful within a contrasting and consuming world.

However, another interpretation of this Necronomicon's apocalypse, where the dragons will conquer man, in combination with the known apocalypse version, could also signify a certain state where men will no longer be connected to earth, and where nature will take over again. In that way it will combine both stories differently. According to Hindu writings this so called apocalypse, or the end of one breath of Brahma, still takes billions of years, so there’s really nothing to worry about.

But, again, If one really would open a small possibility of a truth of interpretation, -going in the direction pof a doom-thinkers theory-, one could also interpret this that once man deliberately makes the Apocalyptic choice no longer to listen to what is needed from an inner growth reason, including earth, humanity etc, or any of the draconic impulses, but want only the religious mind to take over, and make a decision to divide the good and bad themselves, it could also mean that this earth after a while might be destroyed by our own ignorance, with the idea the human mind can do it all on its own. Only if that would be the case, men will indeed leave earth to the dragon powers only, who will live happily ever after..

One Night I had a frightful dream –a tribute to H.P.Lovecraft (1890-1937)- (N,2004)***

Edgar Allen Poe and H.P.Lovecraft both had horrifying visions, of which some came out true later. I read before, of Poe’s vision and fear of being buried alive which must have become true, after he was drugged and buried soon after. Another story by him, “the narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym” was about a shipbreak, and the murder by the survivors of a boy called Richard Parker, the boy being eaten by the others soon after. A similar story with another Richard Parker became true. Sometimes some horrors of the mind seem to become true. But even such visions can be interpreted differently, through various perspectives. The true nature of those dark Romantic poetic and horror visions were always connected to possibilities of the mind, which becomes moulded through a natural flow of circumstances. Musicians who are inspired by writers from the past century never forget that link. Just remember how Tolkien inspired musicians before with elvin and gnome-like visions now a movie, the inspiration became a horrifying “action of life” with a different perspective and more action, and a different quest, bringing bonds with nature into a fantasy environment for the action and quest itself.
Lumpy Davy (also member of the psychedelic group Smell Of Incense) wrote an introduction biography on Lovecraft in the booklet of this LP, placing his writing into his life's perspective. Fiction and reality, esoteric knowledge and vast memories were mixed in his work, confusing people in works (like that) with the reference to The Necronomicom (referring to a blasphemous book written by Arab Abdul Alhazred). Thanks to the care of some correspondent friends his heritage was saved and recognized. The Arkham house still is a house for horror stories. The group received permission to use Lovecraft’s texts. It seems that more than a hundred bands used Lovecraft’s name and inspiration before them !
About 15 years ago, around the time I heard at least the first Smell of Incense release I remember having heard a demo by this band, Famlende Forsok. I never knew where to place it, because it had one leg in the dark industrial underground scene & the tape trader scene, while another was moving towards different, perhaps psych or more acoustic territories.
In this consistent release we hear textual fragments of H.P. Lovecraft’s work, sometimes terrifying visions, or philosophic with retrospective thoughts, accompanied by tempered improvisations, from doomy atmospheres to  gothic neo-folk, Third Ear Band like medieval acid folk, loop like acoustic sounds, with ritual like loops, whale like sounds, and near the end some electric guitar loops and samples. Only one track, “At the Mountains of madness” is like a nightmarish vision completely put into music, with a weird dark voice, electric bass guitar and different loops. Those who want to dig deeper into the visionary aspects of the writings of H.P.Lovecraft will find with this release some inspiring help. The style of the music cannot be put into some easy category. I can only say it fits well with the readings being recorded on the album. Only 500 printed !

This item is a bit weaker, especially because of the recording quality (from the bootleg item I have), but it has nice moments.  I remember there was another item I heard which had used some similar references as here, like the "Summertime" song,... That item was Ruphus Zuphall's "Weiss der Teufel" (D).

First unofficial rerelease in 1995. I believe it is now rereleased with bonus tracks and booklet and better quality.
Camera Obscura Goblin Market : Ghostland (2001)***'

In Acid Folk music I often saw references to the Pre-Raphaelites, a period from last century accosiated with literature but mostly known for its realistic paintings of heavenly dreamy castle woman in a kind of purity within some natural landscapes. This period came before Symbolism which contained much deeper and darker mysticism. The most pastoral examples of Acid Folk and Folk Rock are easily associated with this first period. Some fantasy literature delivered inspiration. Elves and goblin worlds, and later some Tolkien work as references for a world where the sound of the instruments works more like a mystic natural environment. Songs can be tales with mentioned references in a musical way.

Goblin Market is a project from Jeff Kelly, leader of the psych pop group The Green Pajamas, with cooperation of Laura Weller. There's a shared interest for literature of the Pre-Raphaelites.  Altough the syle of the group is slightly pop acoustic folk, the appreciation for acid folk of groups like Mellow Candle (as female overdubbed voices and piano in "No Grace") and similar groups from the UK acid folkrock period can be heard very clearly. In that way the mood of those songs and sometimes the instruments are reflecting similar visions. In only one song they experimented a few seconds in a psychedelic way, a moment that brakes the dreamy atmosphere. In general this album can be of interest for those interested in modern dreamy psych folkpop singersongwriting within a frame of those 70's acid folk that had references to the Pre-Raphaelites before, like those albums on the Erewhon / Kissing Spell label.

Literature Inspiration for this Goblin Market project : poems by Christina Rosetti, Emily Brontë,Elizabeth Siddal, E.A.Poe, Kelly, and Weller.
