Spinney Rec.Nancy Wallace : Young Hearts EP (UK,2008)****

I remembered the beautiful folkish and defenitely charming voice of Nancy Wallace (from the Memory Band). This is her first EP which I thought at first were songs of her own, songs related with painful moments in a relationship as well some hopelessly romantic ones. But the strangest thing is that these were 4 hand picked covers from the disco area, (like ’Are you ready for love?’ as made famous by the Spinners) which, in a folky version, with just a sweet voice, guitar and a bit of violin improvisation / arrangement mostly (by bandmate Jennymay Logan but he's also playing in the Elysian Quartet), stripped to its vulnerable lyrics give them also, when you listen closely to its lyrical content a vulnerable character. “Are you ready for love” that way sounds a so desperate for love it becomes a bit sentimental, almost naïve, promising the whole world and the best for someone who would be able to love, (-from what I have experienced in life and while dealing with its possible realities I couldn’t promise such a perfection, except only a dedication to life, and the best of luck and an honesty in its growing process, or just that much of care and loyalty-). And Barry White’s “you’re the first, the last, my everything” I could almost only believe at first, in this folky version, as being even a bit more sentimental, naïve or otherwise in some other version as being cynical. Hearing Barry White sing this song, a rather macho bear, he shows with it certain vulnerability. Sung in a folky version with this sweet voice I would say becareful, my lady, for what changes in life could bring in times of change when some people’s survival quests are prepared to give up promises when it seems that for some it were personal desires that are still cared for more in the end (It sounds more a slavish comitment than a promise). “At last I’m free” is much more dealing with changed situations, and feels therefore more painfully real. The singing is so sweet, and the melodies ought to be hugged, the whole result as well as the charming interpretations still are winners and very attractive above all.

I heard a full release is already in the pipeline..

Meniscus Hump Rec.Kim Thompsett : Songs From the Uglee Meadow (UK,2008)***°

Kim Thompsett’s self-penned solo acoustic album is lovely. It has all the flavours well combined into one harmony of traditional English and Celtic folk, medieval songs and minstrel inspirations, a somehow magickal pagan related love for nature with twinky images of pinheads and faeries not too far to imagine in its conditions, with a sweetness of expression between fiction, myth and reality and old literature (2 tracks with lyrics by Cecil Fuller or T.H.White). Her voice has a folk flavour. Also her flute playing is worthy of mention. With soft bodhran, a few great arrangements by violin or hurdy-gurdy are also worth noticing. The core band consists of four members, while live there were sessions with 5 more people, including Will Summers from Circulus, Sarah Tadros from the Flat Cat Band, Philippe G Martin from Drohne and Ian Tullett from Ugenix. It is the perfect mix of old English with new Pagan that blends here so wonderful.

Voodoo Rhythm Rec.Mama Rosin : Brule Lentement (CH,2009)***°

More varied, and with more ‘subtle loudness’ than the previous album (the title in English means “Shout quietly”), this band combines great and powerfull old Cajun with poor man’s blues, boogie woogie, some twang guitars, honky tonk zydeco, and an occasional African ! touch (track 3) or who knows a Swiss folk dance flavour, and this with roots spoken word and vocals, with some distortion. This is stage sweat energetic music, as if with a folk element, but also with a punkish nature, smoothed by different arrangements, made danceable by the accordion (or melodeon). At some stage, like a street stage concert, a few songs sounded a bit similar but then, quickly different variety appeared and appealed for new energy. Mama Rosin is original with traditions! The label added descriptive terms like cajun'roll or power cajun, they are of course also more than that.

Voodoo Rhythm Rec.The Pussywarmers : My Pussy belongs to Daddy (CH,2009)****

This is something I could only expect to come from the Voodoo Rhythm label. But in God’s sake what style do these hot juicy Pussywarmers play ? Raw hunky tonk old time folk ? They sing in group with a punkish attitude towards the group singing, in English, sound humoristic at times, for instance as if being a belly speaking puppet or a foreigner who can only remember some words for being too drunk to speak differently (“I wanna have”), or while being early morning’s bloody serious at the solo‘, or melancholic at times when hit by the poison of alcohol, singing a German song once. The production is great, like each Voodoo Rhythm album, combining the rawness of the surprise of semi-live acts, and the sober seriousness with an ear to the best sounds and arrangements in studio conditions. This way the songs vary a lot, from street gang walking brass band near a circus, to old time jazz (“au revoir madame”), showing gospel-blues lyrics on semi-old time music (“I saw the devil”) falling back more often on rather honky-tonk rhythms, sometimes with parlophone singing, playing in general on banjo/double bass/trumpet and trombone(?). This production makes the songs more than from any late night entertaining bands, but presents them like collection of real life inspirations and unique moments.

Midwich Rec.Nancy Wallace : Old Stories (UK,2009)**°

I wanted to check the full release too, after the rather promising mini-CD. The roots here are most often very much into folk, provoking a sort of sweet sort of folkbar cosiness, while all songs except for three traditional are self-penned. The violin or accordion, banjo or ukulele improvises on the songs relatively easily just like being improvised at a late evening live folk gig, at times the softness and snooziness becomes a bit too easy and velvet soft making the album a bit softer than necessary. The voice is lovely, the songs are fine and sounds innocent, slightly sad. I won’t say much more this time. It will take a few listens I think.. (no lyrics are included).
