V.A. : "Les Singulières" Paris 2009 (B,2009)****
The singular talents of Home Records are often the crème of the more matured, professional Belgian acoustic and classically gifted scene. They will be brought together in a three days festival in Paris of which this cd is an introduction. Three compositions from each band are featured on this ompilation with some sort of highlight that represents them.
All of them sound like studio recordings but I am not sure yet if these are the same versions as you can find on their cd’s.
Let me go quickly through the tracks. I think they combine really well, because most bands have a chamber-music like attitude while you can also hear certain themes return in different variations.
The album starts with a diatonic accordion duet, a filmic waltz by Fabian Beghin and Didier Laloy, followed by a beautiful medieval song by Les Tisserands, accompanying voice with harp, flutes, medieval string, double bass, clarinet, a brilliant composition and great voice. The third track is by Mr.Diagonal and his band. In this context this fits perfectly, as theatre folk with interesting piano and a gifted accompanying band, with a great and well arranged contemporary (rock) composition. Day two is presented by Massot-Florizoone-Horbazweski. On this track we hear folk chamber music where the trombone leads the rhythm. Aurélia’s track with wordless vocals, like the track by Dazibao, both use like the previous waltz, an old time dance rhythms inspirations, also combining creatively different ideas into this style. Day three, my favourite, introduces for me the band Dietrich, a folk band with medieval influence and nice harmonies. Thierry Crommen’s track, mouth accordion with jazz band is a good alternation, which swings freshly as well. That concert like this compilation will end with Karim Bagilli’s performance on oud, with great additional cello and flute. I wish I could be there, at least on the last day. But unfortunately a small trip to Paris will be a little bit too expensive at this moment.
This leaves me with this heartily recommended compilation. Not sure if this one will also be sold officially.
